Information Technology in a Global Society is a subject taken by students studying for the International Baccalaureate Diploma at Grades 11 and 12 at the International School Dhaka, Bangladesh. The ITGS course is the study and evaluation of the impact of information technology (IT) on individuals and society.

Health and Medicine: HIPAA

This week we visited the relatively new hospital opposite our school, Apollo international hospital. We spoke to the IT Manager about the impact of IT on all parts of hospital services and functions. He talked briefly about HIPAA, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
Do some investigation into Title II of this act in terms of privacy and security.
Can you descibe the meaning of this Act? What are your opinions about this?

    I am enjoying reading this conversation thread. Saif, your comment 'nothing is fool proof' is astute. The development of policies and regulations comes towards protecting the users and the victims of the system however it is largely in the hands of the few who have access and we rely on human nature to an extent to ensure good ethical and moral actions.

    I quite agree with Saif, and his idea to always keep in mind that nothing is "full proof". No matter how secure a system may be someone, other than the true owner can always gain access to his/her data.

    However, the HIPPA is a step forward in securing a patience data.

    Along with the privacy act, and the addition of codes, a patient can rely on the hospital he/she is handing their personal information to.
